Tuesday, March 20th, 2007How I wish we can get half of this speed at home… or even a quarter!
I got my Internet access setup back home last week with the Japan telco company - NTT East. It’s an ADSL connection with 47Mbps down and 5Mbps up speed! Unfortunately for me… I can’t get FTTH connection in my place as it’s not in the service area. FTTH over here in Tokyo gives you 100Mbps up and down! and depending on the service provider - some offers you a really good deal.
Nonetheless, the service here is really efficient besides having a bit more procedures to follow. The best part is that I don’t even need to go to their office or service center to sign up. Everything is done via online, over the telephone and fax. After I’ve successfully signed up and confirmed the application - they even couriered the ADSL modem together with a neat looking contract (it’s in Japanese though… so, didn’t bother reading it).

The NTT Modem and contract.
So, last Monday after I got my modem - I was really excited. Finally, I got some other form of entertainment now besides watching Japanese TV. I plugged it in and power it up… hoping that the ADSL light come on as the original stipulated date of installation was the following day on Tuesday. And low and behold, it came on! So, I fired up my iBook and briefly setup the PPoE connection and voila! I’m connected.
After using it for a week now… I’m extremely pleased with the speed (check out the pics below). Now all that’s left is to get myself a new PC cause with my current iBook - I can’t multi-task. It’s just too much to demand from an old G3 600MHz processor. Nevertheless, I’m really happy that my iBook is still running strong now albeit a little slow. I might just turn it into a small time file server or something later on.
Now back to my initial statement -
How I wish we can get half of this speed back in Malaysia… or even a quarter!
Cheers~!
