exams creeping nearer… and nearer…

Just a week to go before the final exams… this semester I got 3 subjects which requires me to sit for a final paper and a FYP that I have to submit a thesis, research paper as well as to make a presentation in this year’s CUTSE Conference. All happening this month!!! Argh… *stress* *stress*

It is also down to the final month that I’ll be in Curtin Sarawak before I finish my studies… looking back, it has been 4 years I’m in Miri and I must say that Miri has progressed a lot over the past few years. Leaving this place will be hard but it’ll be exciting as well to move onto the next phase in life. Life goes on…

Anyway, if you’re just like me who’ll be sitting for your examination soon, here’s some handy tips that might help you focus:

  • Get organised. It’s really important to prioritise your time, and make a schedule of what needs to get done and when. It’s also a good idea to tidy up your work space as this can help to make you feel more in control and less stressed.
  • Take regular breaks. You should allow yourself plenty of short breaks as you revise, this keeps you fresher for longer so you can learn more.
  • Exercise. This is a fantastic stress buster. Go running, play a sport, walk briskly around the block or dance to your favourite song! Exercise will boost your energy, clear your mind and help to reduce feelings of stress. It can also help if you’re not sleeping well too.
  • Eat healthily. Make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, and drink plenty of water. Try to avoid too much tea, coffee, fizzy drinks or alcohol.
  • Be positive and visualise success. Sports psychologists have long known that visualising success can significantly improve performance in sporting competitions, ironically though most of us do the opposite for exams. You can build confidence and minimise stress by being positive about what you do know, and not negative about what you don’t.
  • Schedule time for YOU. Make sure you factor into your schedule some regular time for fun. You will need to put your books down and do something you enjoy occasionally in order to stay positive. Why not see a movie, catch up with friends, go to the beach, or go and see a band.
  • Get enough sleep. Tiredness promotes anxiety. Try to keep your sleep routine as normal as possible and spend some time unwinding before you go to bed.
  • Don’t compare yourself with others. Comparing our own exam performance or preparation with others can often cause debilitating stress. Try to use your own performance as a standard against which to set goals.
  • Ask for help. Don’t be afraid to ask people for help with your study. Your lecturers, the librarians and classmates all know what you are going through and may be able to provide helpful advice that can help you with effective study.
