Life after Graduation

Posted on Monday 30 October 2006

Considering the fact that I’m at the brink of completing my undergraduate degree, I’ve started to wonder about what I’ll be doing next (okay, maybe I started to wonder much earlier). There’s a big possibility that I’ll be getting a job and start working but even that poses some questions such as where will I work? How much will I get paid and if it’s sufficient to sustain my expenses? What will my job be like and how is the job prospect in the future? hmmm… These questions can be very bothersome at times… but I must admit that I’m very lucky and blessed to have wonderful friends and family around me to support me and some even introduced me to a couple of job prospects. ::respect:: Thank you dear friends…

Anyway, last Saturday CSS organized a one day talk on “Life After Graduation” and it couldn’t have come at a better timing. This gave me the opportunity to evaluate my personal level of competency as well as provided me a chance to look at the areas that I need to work on to better prepare myself.

The talk is split into 3 sessions :-
The FIRST session is about Self Discovery and Finding that balance in Life.
This session is presented by Dr. Joseph Ko and it really gave me a good insight on looking at my potential and how much more I can achieve. One particular thing the Dr. Joseph Ko shared was looking at your Wheel of Life and evaluate on how to achieve a more balanced life. I think in life… sometimes we need to take a pit stop and evaluate our current situation… and the Wheel of Life help us to put it into perspective. Mine is waaaaay off~… hahaha…

The SECOND session is into “Resume & Applying for Job”.
This session is presented by Mr. Polycarp Gumis and he highlighted lots of key areas and gave us lots and lots of pointers (it was quite a load of information to be digested in such a short time ;) ) about how to prepare a resume and how to prepare to attend an interview. In this session, one area that caught my attention was on the Desired Behavior that employers seek. These behaviors will define your working style and it’s very important to constantly keep them in mind.
If you’re looking for more info on resume writing, do check out our very own resources at the Curtin Guild - Fact Sheets. There’s a good paper on writing cover letter and how to write a winning resume.

The THIRD and final session of the day is about “Investment & Budgeting”.
The presenter of this session is Mr. Philip Lau and he brought up some really good quotes and references from books such as The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey and also Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I’ve personally read these two books and they do provide some nice insights on how to manage yourself more effectively and managing your finances. I need to remind myself once in a while to evaluate my expenses regularly… cause sometimes I feel like I have no idea where my money go to??? always broke… sigh~…

So, what will you do after your graduation? and if you’ve graduated, any advice you can offer to those who’s about to step into the working world?

Best of luck to all the final year students in Curtin Sarawak and study smart for your exams! Cheers~!
