Back in Miri

Posted on Wednesday 22 February 2006

Miri isn’t a bad place once you get used to it… get used to the kolok mee, get used to travelling 45 minutes on a rackety bus to get to town, get used to the sun coming up at 6am (sunrise is around 6:45-7:00am back in KL) and above all, get used to having no Internet access at home.

So, I can say that I’ve blend-in to Miri lifestyle… hahaha.. okay, that was a bit biased but hey what can i do? I was the one that choose to come here in the first place. Anyway, setting all the cons aside I must say that things are improving a lot.

First of all, telephone service is now available at the place I’m staying which means I’ll hopefully be able to get Internet access at home fairly soon. Then, I have classes at 8am everyday (Mon-Fri) which then the sun rise thingy is a good thing! Also, nowadays I hitch a ride with my friends who owns a car here to town… so, lesser trips on a rackety bus to town too!

See, not everything bad is a bad thing… you just gotta look real hard for the little silver lining… :)

Well, another good news is that the StreamyX Hotpot in the cafeteria works pretty fine for normal Internet surfing and IM but not good enough for any downloads (I’m still trying to download a 7MB file and it’s been an hour!)

So, rather than trying to crack the restricted connection in the Uni’s network, I can opt to take the easy way out and just use the unrestricted Internet access connection now! Yay!

Okay, that’s about all I can type for now… Cheers~!

    Benet,
If your housing area are facing problems like no streamyx connection, road, street lighting…., please do not hesitate contact

1.MCC hotline 085-424111(best but only work during office hour)
    2. MCC e-Request (http://erequest.emoss.com.my/mmc/erequestmain.nsf/fMM1?OpenForm)

They will take action quickly but the 2nd one will be slower because they need to retrieve data from e-Request system, put in a report and send it out to the relevant section for action.

If you doubt if your complains will be entertained by Miri City Council(MCC), don’t worry, the answer is YES!! If you do not believe, please surf http://chinese.cari.com.my/myforum/viewthread.php?tid=437474&page=2&extra=page%3D1

p/s: For the sake to make complain processing time shorter, you must write a very accurate road name for MCC to identify the area you wish to complain. If you are not sure, you can buy Miri Street Directory 2nd Edition 2004(RM 10) to check.

In case you want my help, can message me through Friendster(simpohgiap@hotmail.com).

    Good luck!

Hi… thanks for all the info man. With regards to StreamyX, I’ve already mailed TM and apparently there’s already a lot of people on the waiting list… so, just waiting for them to actually activate the service (which I hope will be fairly soon and not 6 months later!) :)

Thanks for the contact of MCC.. didn’t really know that they have an online e-Request system. Cool!

yes, actually Sarawak governmnet is very keen to push IT throughout the state.According to my friends work in SAINS, he say actually Sarawak is the 1st state in Malaysia truly implement the e-government concept. He say KL currently although very advance compare to other state but their system is not centralised and every PBT/LA(Local Authority) only work independently. Now even very rural area in Sarawak also have their own website and all Sarawak govenment officer is equiped with hi-end PC from DELL and CISCO network system(D-Link is considered not stable).
